Living in the now

This morning’s commute to the office gave me the chance to reflect on the awesome power of the sun.  Not only providing the right balance of light and heat to our planet to enable us to live but, as if this wasn’t enough (!), it only needs to start shining to lift our hearts and souls out of their Monday morning drudge.  The Monday commute for many of us is something to be “got through” rather than celebrated and enjoyed.  In reality most commuters are focussed on the time, the job ahead that day or perhaps their plans for the weekend – anything in fact rather than enjoying living in that moment.

Today though, the sun streamed down on me and my little car as we raced along with the rest of the traffic.  A great tune shuffled out the ipod onto the car stereo and all at once my eyes really took in the beauty of the springtime surroundings – sights I so often miss in my rush to start the day: the wonderful depth of green in the trees now so full of life that they created a beautiful “tunnel of trees”; the beauty of the sun reflecting off the glassy dew; and the birds flying across the clean, fresh morning sky.  Only then did I notice that I was enjoying that very moment – not thinking about the weekend I’d just had or the day ahead but LIVING in the NOW.

“Most people treat the present moment as if it were an obstacle that they need to overcome.  Since the present moment is Life itself, it is an insane way to live” (Eckhart Tolle, author of The Power of Now)

I couldn’t agree more.  Make today count – stop for one moment today and take in the picture around you.  Savour it, enjoy it and LIVE in it.

It’s true! It’s so easy to just get caught up in the drudgery of everyday, and then sometimes all it takes is a little bit of sun to brighten the day.

Thanks Kirsten. I’ll take it a step further: sometimes we have to create our own sunshine for ourselves and for those around us.
