2012: Year of the Firework

It happened on an otherwise mundane moment in January.  You can picture the grey skies and the feelings of bleakness that were threatening to descend.  Anyway, to cut to the chase, I had my iPod on to fade out the silence of inactivity that was reducing me to a miserable wreck, when Katy Perry popped up.  Not literally.  Wow, that would be a whole different type of post.  Just one of her lively, little songs: Firework.

It dawned on me as I listened to it that this should be THE anthem for 2012 for everyone who feels like they don’t know where they are heading, or that life is all too much, or who are just so tired and worn out that there is nothing left to give.

“Do you ever feel like a plastic bag
Drifting through the wind, wanting to start again?
Do you ever feel, feel so paper-thin
Like a house of cards, one blow from caving in?

Do you ever feel already buried deep?
Six feet under screams but no one seems to hear a thing”

However you feel right now, and no matter what situations you are facing, you are special.  You are unique.  There is a spark of life in you that is not in anyone else.  There is no-one in the whole world like you and no-one who can give what you can give.

“You don’t have to feel like a waste of space
You’re original, cannot be replaced”

This is a song to inspire.  A song to make you want to grab life with both hands, whatever that life might bring, and be 100% yourself.  Read/listen to those lyrics and let them lift you up from where you are now.

“Do you know that there’s still a chance for you
‘Cause there’s a spark in you?

…’Cause baby, you’re a firework
Come on, show ’em what you’re worth”

Don’t worry about someone else’s goals, resolutions or ambitions for 2012.  You are not them and you don’t ever get to be them.  But, and this is the big one, you do get to be you – and you are the only one who can be.

“It’s always been inside of you, you, you
And now it’s time to let it through”

Live your life to the full.  Take time to be yourself this year.  Shine brighter than the moon.  In fact, don’t stop there – shine brighter than the sun and keep on shining.

Firework

“Do you ever feel like a plastic bag
Drifting through the wind, wanting to start again?
Do you ever feel, feel so paper-thin
Like a house of cards, one blow from caving in?

Do you ever feel already buried deep?
Six feet under screams but no one seems to hear a thing
Do you know that there’s still a chance for you
‘Cause there’s a spark in you?

You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine
Just own the night like the 4th of July

‘Cause baby, you’re a firework
Come on, show ’em what you’re worth
Make ’em go, oh
As you shoot across the sky

Baby, you’re a firework
Come on, let your colors burst
Make ’em go, oh
You’re gonna leave ’em falling down

You don’t have to feel like a waste of space
You’re original, cannot be replaced
If you only knew what the future holds
After a hurricane comes a rainbow

Maybe you’re reason why all the doors are closed
So you could open one that leads you to the perfect road
Like a lightning bolt, your heart will blow
And when it’s time, you’ll know

You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine
Just own the night like the 4th of July

‘Cause baby you’re a firework
Come on, show ’em what you’re worth
Make ’em go, oh
As you shoot across the sky

Baby, you’re a firework
Come on, let your colors burst
Make ’em go, oh
You’re gonna leave ’em falling down

Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
It’s always been inside of you, you, you
And now it’s time to let it through

‘Cause baby you’re a firework
Come on, show ’em what you’re worth
Make ’em go, oh
As you shoot across the sky

Baby, you’re a firework
Come on, let your colors burst
Make ’em go, oh
You’re gonna leave ’em falling down

Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon”

(Katy Perry, Mikkel S. Eriksen, Tor Erik Hermansen, Sandy Wilhelm & Ester Dean, from the album “Teenage Dream”)

One for the long road:

If you still don’t feel special or important, try this one for size:

“Long before he [God] laid down earth’s foundation, he had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love” (Ephesians 1:4, The Message Bible – Eugene Peterson)

The one greater than the whole universe loves you and planned your existence.  Wow, that’s one big reason to feel special.

I haven’t listened to any of her music, but this one has an encouraging message. The scripture is a favorite, though! 🙂

I was so surprised myself having never really listened to the lyrics properly before. Amazing what gems you can find when you are in the right frame of mind.

      Mine too!
